Teacher, How Can I Get a Better Grade?

dibblenancy

My Answer to a Quora Question: How can a student improve their grades in a class? How do teachers typically respond when asked about improving grades?

  1. Start by ensuring that you have no “0’s” in the grade book. Each missed assignment is really hard on your grade. For example: If you have 2 assignments, each worth 10 points for a total of 20 pts even if you earned a full 10 points on assignment #1, if you did not turn in the 2nd assignment your grade is still a 50 % (10/20). However, if you did both assignments and had a 10 on one and a 5 on the other you will have 75% (15/20).

  2. The vast majority of teachers are absolutely thrilled if you want to improve your grade. Some will not accept late work or make-up work but many will. You may not get full credit for late work but most teachers will give you partial credit.

  3. If low test scores are hurting your grade then change how you study. Spend time quizzing yourself (practicing recall is a great way to help information stick), study with others, make your own quiz cards. Do not simply read over your notes. That does not work well for most people because the brain is not engaged deeply enough into the content. If you work with the content (discuss it, make notes, draw pictures of the concepts, think of real-life examples, make your own quiz questions) then you will help that information “stick” and it will be much easier to recall at test time.

  4. Pay close attention when the teacher explains a concept or direction. Be focused on class in class. Save chatting and visiting for before school, at lunch, after school or briefly when a teacher is doing something like passing papers out. The rest of the time in class, focus on learning.
